Kickstarter Live FAQs
Creator FAQs
What internet connection do I need to do a live stream?
We suggest at least a 2Mbps upload speed. You can check your internet speed here.
What device & browser can I broadcast from?
You must broadcast from your computer using either Chrome (recommended) or Firefox. You can download Chrome here.
Can I live stream from my phone?
Not at this time, but we’re working on it!
Can I use an external microphone or camera?
Yes you can, but it must be a USB microphone or camera so that the browser can detect it and use it.
Can I live stream using desktop software like wirecast or OBS?
Kickstarter Live will eventually support more advanced live streaming using desktop software. Right now, the set up to run Kickstarter Live with this type of software is very manual. If you'd like to beta test this feature when it's available please get in touch at live@kickstarter.com.
What is the optimal image size for a background image?
An image that's 1000 by 500 pixels works best.
Is the live stream recorded?
Yes it is. We will generate a replay which will have the chat, Q&A, and other audience interaction laid over it. You will also be able to download the raw video from the live stream.
What's the best way to share the live stream?
Once you’ve created your live stream, you’ll have access to a link that you can use to spread the news. 48 hours before you’re scheduled to go live, a countdown will also appear on your project page below your project video. Encourage people to sign up through this widget to get a reminder and to post questions beforehand.
Can I sync to Facebook Live? [Beta]
You most certainly can. Once you start streaming on Kickstarter, you can stream to Facebook Live simultaneously so your broadcast will show up on both your project page and Facebook. Keep in mind that viewers on Facebook will not see the live chat, Q&A, selfies, or backer notifications, and comments on Facebook will not show up on your Kickstarter Live broadcast. Please have someone moderate Facebook Live if you expect a large audience.
Also, when you write a description for the Facebook post, please link to your project page or Kickstarter Live page so viewers on Facebook have an easy way to find your project.
Can I share the live stream before it gets embedded into my project page?
Yes you can. Once you've created your live stream, you will have a direct link that you can share in any way you like.
How many live viewers can I have? Is there a maximum?
There is no maximum for live viewers.
Can I play music during my live stream?
Only play music (or other audio or video) if you own the rights to it. Remember that Kickstarter Live is subject to the same Terms of Use as the rest of Kickstarter. We may interrupt or remove your live stream if we find that it's violating our policies.
Viewer FAQs
How can I watch live streams?
Watch live streams from any browser on mobile or web, or on the Kickstarter iOS app. You can chat with creators during live streams on the app, and eventually you’ll be able to submit questions and send selfies.
Will my browser need any plug-ins?
No, but if you’re having trouble viewing the live stream, we’d recommend refreshing your browser, making sure you don’t have the live stream open in multiple windows, and checking that you’re running the latest version of your web browser.
