What will the money in this Kickstarter go to? Just for raising awareness?

With the race to mine asteroids, do you feel there will be an increased risk of asteroid strikes with commercial entities either relocating asteroids into a near earth orbit, or affecting the trajectory of orbits through mining operations, removal of mass, etc. ?

What are the odds of an asteroid hitting the earth in our lifetime? Has anyone thought about some kind of defense system against a major impact? What can I do to help defend against a threat from an asteroid?

I'm a high school physics teacher and want to develop a project around asteroids (probably energy unit) and also hit my NGSS standards. Any suggestions on how I can build this or can you refer me to resources?

Question 1: Do you see governmental (or intergovernmental) organization as necessary for a real asteroid defense program, or is the private (or nonprofit, or just non-governmental) organization capable of it too?

Is the best way to deflect an asteroid is by using lasers to release gas? Or use a larger mass that has a large magnet?

To elaborate on my post and address it in a series of questions. Were an asteroid to be on an impact trajectory with Earth, what are our best solutions to prevent it as of today? What types of detection systems do we have to see the incoming asteroid? Do we still rely on still image photographs taken here on Earth and in orbit as our only means of detecting them? I ask this question because I'm wondering if, since the asteroid is in motion, is it generating a magnetic field that if we had the appropriate detectors in space we might be able to 'see' it earlier? Would AI better assist us with this task once we refine quantum computing and give it the ability to network across space as to better detect magnetic disturbances throughout our solar system? Back to the incoming asteroid, could we use a series of seismic generators to producing an alternating pattern of quakes to cause the asteroid to want to crumble or split? If this was accomplished, would the pieces just disintegrate in our atmosphere? Or would the pieces be more manageable for other uses to get rid of them? Although rather silly, I'm kind of picturing what a railgun might do in space for smaller fragments/asteroids? Other than destroying it, could we use AI controlled modules to push the target out of our trajectory? What more can I do to help The Planetary Society in propelling humanity forward in space?

While using AI can you calculate the incoming path of an asteroid, and if so what is the plan to deflect such object away for impact path. Will we send a nuclear missle to blow the side of it to out of adjustment or go with gravitational assistance to adjust it with large enough probe, or a direct hit of a solid aluminum spike at the just right angle to nudge it over, or land a probe with strong enough rockets to propel it away some to miss us. But before doing so can AI run simulations on how is the best way of going about doing it, and using AI to adjust the suicide vessel while it rides it way to kick asteroids right in its asteroid

I’m a high school physics teacher at a project-based charter school in the Bay Area, CA looking to add some activities or even an entire project themed around cosmic impacts and asteroids. I know energy is a great unit to introduce this, but do you have any suggestions, or can you point me to some resources, to help me build an engaging project that would hit my NGSS standards and show my students the importance of knowing about the threat of asteroids and having a plan in place? I’m hoping to inspire the next generation to do more about this, and I can imagine this could be cross-curricular and involve writing to local politicians, in addition to the physics.

As a combination of a number of questions below; what are the most practical options for planetary defence, considering timelines, costs, effectiveness and international cooperation?

1
William

If the meteor explosions over Chelyabinsk in February 2013 or off the coast of Brazil in February 2016 should have taught the world anything, it's that the asteroid threat is very real and that we are exceptionally vulnerable. Planetary defense is absolutely paramount. DART is a good step in the right direction, but it's also too small because it assumes we would know of an asteroid threat decades in advance.

There seems to have been little progress on real planetary defense besides DART. Is that the case? If not, is the holdup just a question of funding or policy, or is the technology/science still not there?

Michelle

How much money would it cost for us to set up a generic planetary defense system in space?

Are there any new missions set to land on an asteroid like the Rosetta mission did on the comet? Does the Planetary Society have any current projects planned to study asteroids and how they could potentially benefit humanity?

Of all the options being considered for diverting an asteroid, are there any that might not depend on a government to implement it?

I'm sorry I'll not be able to attend the live Q & A due to work (eastern time zone), However, my resolution if applicable would be (depending on the size of the target [asteroid]) to build a network of towers/stations that emit a high frequency pulse thus creating a vibration. Alternating this pattern and depending on the amount of seismic activity generated it would hopefully make the asteroid want to tear itself apart.

Space Agencies (incl NASA, ESA, and other Nations). Are programs 'resourced' for tracking objects, and sharing that info? How do we (citizens) view the progress of these rocks?

1
Frank

I know this is controversial but I feel it could vastly increase those interested in asteroids: the Bible says :the sun moon and stars will crumble to DUST...on earth, whole nations will be in despair for the roar of the sea, and the great tides...people will faint from fear, as they wait, for what is coming over the whole earth..an asteroid crashing into the sea produces sush devastation...Carl Sagan says an imact in the northern hemisphere, would take days to circle the southern hemisphere..thus people in the southern hemisphere would faint from fear, as they waited for their skies to grow dark, as the dust encircles the earth...thanks for taking questions...these verses could bring many Christians into the movement to prepare to intercept an asteroid headed for Earth...thanks

When we are able to identify an asteroid with a trajectory that may hit the earth, how much time would we have before it impacts earth? I am referring to an asteroid that would have a major effect on earth. Is there any formula/ rate at which an asteroid would diminish in size?

If we had just a few weeks notice of a mountain-sized asteroid hitting the Earth, would we be better off letting one huge object hit, or attempting to blow it up as much as possible with nuclear weapons, and allow a larger number of smaller impactors to strike the Earth?

Which asteroid measurement has more impact (pun intended): mass, surface area, density or shape? What is the smallest size asteroid being considered for intervention?

1

Do you think a large solar powered charged particle accelerator, on the moon or in space, directing a beam at an incoming asteroid would seem to be the most efficient way to change its trajectory over time. An antiproton beam would be the most effective but harder to generate. What do you think about this idea.

A gravity tractor can be used to deflect an asteroid, but we must commit massive spacecraft to alter the trajectory. Is it practical to consider compounding this effect by guiding smaller asteroids to impart gravitational influence on larger ones, that, in turn, influence larger ones...?
